Game audio in the mic

You hear
Your teammates hear your game, music or video along with your voice.

Game audio in the mic is usually speakers being picked up, or your system or app sending what you hear as well as your voice.

§ 01 — Causes

Likely causes, in order

Check them top to bottom. The room and the mic come first because no setting can remove what a closer mic or a closed door would.

Causes of game audio in the mic and their fixes, most likely first
01 · Layer 02 · Likely cause 03 · Fix
01 · Room Your game plays through speakers and the mic picks it up Use headphones, or turn the speakers down and point the mic away from them headphones
02 · Mic Your headphones are loud enough for the mic to hear them Lower the game volume in your headphones, or use closed headphones that keep the sound in volume down
03 · System Your sound driver records what you hear along with the mic In your sound driver's mixer, record only the mic; if others still hear the game with your headphones at 0%, this is the cause driver mixer
04 · App You are sharing your screen with its sound Turn off Share Sound in Zoom, Include sound in Teams, or tab and system audio in Meet when you don't need them share sound off
05 · App Noise suppression is off, so music and game sounds pass straight through Turn on the app's noise suppression; Xbox suggests turning its filter off only when you want music to come through suppression on
§ 02 — By app

By app

PlayStation party chat
Since a 2024 update, the DualSense and DualSense Edge controller mics use a machine-learning model that suppresses button presses and game audio. Update the controller's software to get it.
Xbox party chat
Xbox party noise suppression removes gamepad clicks, breathing and background noise. It can be turned off in Guide → Parties & chats → Options if you want music to come through.
Zoom
Zoom sends your computer's audio only when you select Share Sound for a screen share, and the shared sound's volume follows the app that plays it.
Microsoft Teams
Teams shares the sound from your screen only when you turn on Include sound as you start sharing.
Google Meet
Meet shares a Chrome tab's audio by default when you present that tab, and a window's or screen's sound only with Also share system audio. Google's fix for other tabs or apps reaching the call is headphones.
§ 03 — Test

Check it with the test

Play your game or some music at your normal volume, then stay quiet in the first step. If the noise floor rises and the meter moves with the music, your mic or driver is picking it up. The test hears only your mic, not a screen share.

§ 04 — Questions

Questions

Q.01My friends hear my game, but I wear headphones. Why?

Either the headphones are loud enough for the mic to hear, or your sound driver records playback along with the mic. TeamSpeak's check: turn your headphones to 0% and ask whether they still hear it. If they do, it is the driver.

Q.02Does the PS5 controller mic filter out game sound?

Sony says that since a 2024 update, the DualSense mic suppresses button presses and game audio with a machine-learning model, once the controller's software is updated.

Q.03How do I share game sound on purpose without an echo?

Share it with the app's share-sound option rather than playing it from speakers into your mic. For Meet, Google says to keep your system's default output device selected when you share system audio, to avoid echoes.
