§ Fix · Bluetooth mic sounds bad

Bluetooth mic sounds bad

You hear
Your earbuds sound fine for music but muffled and thin on calls, for you and for the people you talk to.

Classic Bluetooth drops to a narrow, mono call mode whenever its mic is on. A separate mic, or LE Audio, avoids the switch.

§ 01 — Causes

Likely causes, in order

Check them top to bottom. The room and the mic come first because no setting can remove what a closer mic or a closed door would.

Causes of bluetooth mic sounds bad and their fixes, most likely first
01 · Layer 02 · Likely cause 03 · Fix
01 · Mic Using the headset's mic switches classic Bluetooth from A2DP, its music mode, to HFP, its hands-free call mode, which is mono and narrower Use a different mic, such as the computer's or a USB mic, and keep the earbuds for listening separate mic
02 · Mic The headset is connected to more than one device at once Disconnect it from your phone or other computer before the call one device

04 · System Your PC and headset could use LE Audio, but the setting is off On Windows 11, turn on Use LE Audio when available in Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices, if your PC and headset both support it LE Audio
05 · App The app uses a different mic than you think, or the headset is set as the speaker but not the mic Select the headset as both microphone and speaker in the app, or switch to a USB headset device check

Zoom
Zoom warns that other participants may hear lower-quality audio from your Bluetooth mic. When problems continue, it suggests a different headset, such as a USB one, and notes that a USB adapter can work better than native Bluetooth.
Google Meet
Google notes that some Bluetooth headsets work well for normal calls but poorly with Meet, and that a headset may end up using the built-in mic, so check which mic Meet is set to.
Microsoft Teams
Teams Spatial Audio needs stereo, so over Bluetooth Microsoft makes it available only with an LE Audio headset on a Windows 11 PC that supports super wideband stereo.
Discord
On iOS, Discord routes a call to a Bluetooth device through AirPlay: tap the Bluetooth icon during the call and pick your headset.
FaceTime
With AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3, choosing Voice Isolation in Control Center during a call removes background noise, such as wind, for the person you are talking to.
§ 03 — Test

Check it with the test

Select the Bluetooth headset as your mic, speak in the second step and watch the spectrum. In the oldest call mode, which samples at 8 kHz, nothing above about 4 kHz gets through, so the right side of the spectrum stays dark. Run it again with a wired or USB mic and compare.

§ 04 — Questions

Questions

Q.01Why does my music get worse the moment a call starts?

To use its mic, the headset switches from A2DP, its music profile, to HFP, its call profile. Microsoft says HFP plays audio in mono with lower fidelity than A2DP.

Q.02Are newer earbuds better on calls?

Usually. Windows 11 and most modern headsets support wideband voice, which doubles the original 8 kHz call rate. LE Audio goes further: its profile for headphones requires super wideband voice at 32 kHz. The computer and the headset must both support it.

Q.03What is the quickest fix for a call today?

Use a different mic: a USB or wired headset, or your computer's own mic while the earbuds play the call. Zoom suggests a USB headset when Bluetooth gives trouble.

Q.04Does LE Audio work on Windows 10?

No. Microsoft says LE Audio isn't supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 21H2. You need Windows 11 22H2 or newer, a PC that supports it with up-to-date drivers, and an LE Audio headset.
