Laptop mic picks up typing
You hear
Typing on the laptop thuds and clicks straight into the call through the built-in mic.
A laptop's built-in mic sits in the same case as its keyboard, so a headset or external mic helps more than any setting can.
Likely causes, in order
Check them top to bottom. The room and the mic come first because no setting can remove what a closer mic or a closed door would.
| 01 · Layer | 02 · Likely cause | 03 · Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 01 · Mic | The built-in mic sits in the same case as the keyboard, so every keypress reaches it | Use a headset, or an external mic placed away from the laptop headset |
| 02 · Mic | You type on the laptop's own keyboard while you talk | Plug in a separate keyboard and keep it away from the laptop's mic external keyboard |
| 03 · System | The system's own voice filter is off or not in use | On a Mac, pick Voice Isolation under Mic Mode in a supported app; on a Copilot+ PC, turn on Voice focus in Studio Effects system filter |
| 04 · App | Noise suppression in the app is off, or too gentle for keypresses | Turn noise suppression on; Webex's Noise removal and Google Meet's noise cancellation both name typing suppression on |
| 05 · App | Your mic stays open while you type notes | Stay muted while you type, and hold the spacebar to talk in Zoom or Webex spacebar |
By app
- Webex
- Webex's Noise removal names keyboard typing among the noise it removes. Unmute temporarily by holding Spacebar lets you stay muted while you type.
- Google Meet
- Meet's noise cancellation can remove typing, a closing door, room echo and building work.
- Zoom
- Zoom's Medium level targets fans and tapping sounds, and Press and hold Space key to temporarily unmute lets you talk only while you hold the spacebar.
- Microsoft Teams
- On desktop, Teams' Background noise only setting suppresses the noise around you; Voice isolation also filters out other voices.
- Discord
- With Push to Talk, Discord sends audio only while you hold your key, so typing between sentences stays out of the call.
Check it with the test
Run the first step on the built-in mic while you type as you normally would, then again with a headset. Keypresses show as spikes on the live meter and push up the Peak reading; the second run shows how much of that the headset keeps out.

Q.01Why does my laptop mic pick up typing so loudly?
The mic and the keyboard are built into the same case, so keypresses reach the mic directly. A headset puts the mic at your mouth instead.
Q.02Does Voice Isolation on a Mac help?
Apple says Voice Isolation filters out background sounds in apps that support Mic Modes, such as FaceTime. During a call, click the app's icon in the menu bar, then Mic Mode, then Voice Isolation.
Q.03What about Windows laptops?
On PCs that have it, Windows 11's Voice Clarity cancels echo and suppresses background noise for apps that use the communications mode, with no extra hardware. On Copilot+ PCs with an NPU, Windows Studio Effects adds Voice focus.
