§ Fix · Phone call background noise

Phone call background noise

You hear
Calls on your phone carry street, café or car noise to the person you are talking to.

Phones have their own voice filters for calls. Turn them on, keep the bottom mic near your mouth, and avoid speakerphone in noise.

§ 01 — Causes

Likely causes, in order

Check them top to bottom. The room and the mic come first because no setting can remove what a closer mic or a closed door would.

Causes of phone call background noise and their fixes, most likely first
01 · Layer 02 · Likely cause 03 · Fix
01 · Room You are somewhere loud: a street, a café, a car Step somewhere quieter for the call if you can quieter spot
02 · Mic The phone's bottom mic is far from your mouth, or a case or screen protector covers it Hold the phone so the bottom mic is near your mouth, and check that nothing covers it bottom mic
03 · Mic You are on speakerphone, so the mic is far from you Hold the phone to your ear or use a headset; on iPhone, Automatic uses Voice Isolation at your ear but not on speaker off speaker
04 · System The phone's own call filter is off On iPhone, open Control Center during the call and choose Voice Isolation; on Pixel 7 or later, turn on Clear Calling in Settings → Sound & vibration Voice Isolation
05 · App The calling app's own suppression is off Turn on noise suppression in the app's call settings; WhatsApp and Messenger both have one app setting
§ 02 — By app

By app

FaceTime
Voice Isolation works in FaceTime from iOS 15 and in phone calls from iOS 16.4. With Automatic, from iOS 18, the iPhone uses Voice Isolation for calls at your ear and Standard on speakerphone.
WhatsApp
WhatsApp says its noise suppression removes the background noise around you and can be managed in your in-call settings. It began rolling out gradually in July 2026, so your app may not show it yet.
Messenger
Meta says background noise suppression and voice isolation can be turned on in Messenger's call settings.
Microsoft Teams
In the Teams iPhone app, tap your profile picture → Settings → Calling → Noise suppression and choose Auto, Low or High.
Google Meet
On many Android phones, Meet runs noise cancellation on the phone itself; Google lists Samsung S10 and later among the supported models.
§ 03 — Test

Check it with the test

Run the noise test in your phone's browser where you usually take calls. Stay quiet in the first step: the noise floor is what the other person hears in your pauses. The phone's own call filter is not part of the test, so the floor shows how much noise that filter has to deal with.

§ 04 — Questions

Questions

Q.01Does Voice Isolation work on ordinary phone calls?

Yes, from iOS 16.4 on supported iPhones. During the call, open Control Center, tap the call's controls and choose Voice Isolation under Mic Mode. Wide Spectrum isn't available in phone calls.

Q.02What does Clear Calling do on a Pixel?

Google says it filters background noise so people hear you clearly, in the Phone app on Pixel 7 and later. It depends on call bandwidth and may not work on every call, and it can also muffle background music such as hold music.

Q.03Why do I sound worse on speakerphone?

The mic is further from your mouth, so the room is louder compared with your voice. On iPhone, Automatic also uses the Standard mode on speakerphone rather than Voice Isolation.
