§ 01 — Removes
What it removes
- Background noise around you (Apple says it uses machine learning)
§ 02 — Limits
What it cannot do
- Only certain third-party apps support Mic Modes, and Apple does not list them
- Wide Spectrum is not available in phone calls; Voice Isolation is
- Your choice applies only to the app you are using, and stays set for that app until you change it
- Automatic uses Voice Isolation for calls at your ear and Standard on speakerphone, so pick Voice Isolation yourself if you call on speaker
§ 03 — Setup
Where the setting is
During a call: swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center → the call app's Controls (FaceTime Controls, for example) → Audio & Video → Voice Isolation
The noise test hears your mic the way your browser gets it, which may not include iPhone and iPad Voice Isolation. Run it to see how much noise your mic picks up, so you know how much the filter has to remove.
