§ Fix · Robotic voice

Robotic voice

You hear
Your voice reaches others metallic, chopped up or underwater, or theirs reaches you that way.

A robotic voice is usually late or lost packets on the network, or a headset sending audio at a rate the app does not expect.

§ 01 — Causes

Likely causes, in order

Check them top to bottom. The room and the mic come first because no setting can remove what a closer mic or a closed door would.

Causes of robotic voice and their fixes, most likely first
01 · Layer 02 · Likely cause 03 · Fix
01 · Mic A Bluetooth headset is in its low-quality call mode, or it is connected to more than one device Disconnect the headset from your other devices, or use a USB or wired headset for the call USB headset
02 · System The mic's input rate doesn't match what the app expects, which Discord reports as error 1003 Use separate devices for input and output, such as a USB mic with separate headphones, or try a different mic separate devices
03 · System The computer is busy, so the call's audio processing falls behind Close heavy apps and extra browser tabs before the call close apps
04 · App Noise suppression is working hard and bending your voice Turn suppression off for one test call and listen to the difference suppression off
05 · Network Jitter and packet loss: parts of your audio arrive late or not at all Use a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, pause downloads and turn off a VPN for the call wired
06 · Network The voice server is far from you or from the people you are talking to In Discord, set the voice channel's Region Override to a region between you and the others voice region
§ 02 — By app

By app

Microsoft Teams
Microsoft lists calls with static, cutting out or voices that sound like robots as signs of jitter or packet loss. On Wi-Fi it favors the 5 GHz band, because the 2.4 GHz band is often crowded by other devices.
Zoom
Zoom's meeting statistics show latency, jitter and packet loss while you are in a meeting. Zoom recommends latency of 150 ms or less, jitter of 40 ms or less and packet loss of 2% or less.
Discord
Discord's error 1003, audio input rate mismatch, causes robot voice or slow speech and is most common with gaming headsets that combine mic and headphones. Someone with Manage Channels permission can also move a voice channel to another region with Region Override.
Google Meet
For poor audio, Meet suggests a wired connection or the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, closing extra tabs and apps, and turning off a VPN, which routes your audio through another location.
§ 03 — Test

Check it with the test

The noise test records your mic before anything travels over the network. If the clips from Compare suppression off / on sound clean but people still hear you as robotic, look at the connection and the headset, not the mic.

Run the noise test →
§ 04 — Questions

Questions

Q.01Why do I sound robotic only some of the time?

Bursts usually line up with moments of jitter or packet loss, when parts of your audio arrive late or not at all. Zoom's meeting statistics show both numbers while it is happening.

Q.02Will a better mic fix a robotic voice?

Rarely. Check the network first, then the headset: Discord ties its robot-voice error to headsets that combine mic and headphones, and suggests separate devices.

Q.03Can Wi-Fi cause it?

Yes. Google suggests a wired connection or the 5 GHz band for Meet, and Microsoft notes that the 2.4 GHz band is often crowded by other devices.

Q.04Can noise suppression make me sound robotic?

It can change how you sound. Discord's troubleshooting guide lists turning Noise Suppression off to see whether your audio quality improves, and Krisp turns itself off when your CPU is very busy.
