Voice cutting out
You hear
The first word of each sentence is clipped, quiet words vanish, or you drop out in the middle of speaking.
Clipped first words almost always mean a voice activation threshold set too high. Dropouts mid-sentence point to the connection or Bluetooth.
Likely causes, in order
Check them top to bottom. The room and the mic come first because no setting can remove what a closer mic or a closed door would.
| 01 · Layer | 02 · Likely cause | 03 · Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 01 · Mic | You sit far from the mic, so quiet words fall below the app's threshold | Move closer so your softest words still stand well above the room noise closer |
| 02 · Mic | A Bluetooth headset drops out, or it is also connected to another device | Disconnect it from your other devices, or use a wired or USB headset USB headset |
| 03 · App | The voice activation threshold or input sensitivity is set too high, so soft starts and endings get cut | Lower the threshold, or turn off automatic sensitivity and set the level just above the room noise threshold |
| 04 · App | Automatic gain pushes your level up and down, so you fade in and out | Turn off the app's automatic mic volume and set the level yourself auto gain off |
| 05 · App | Strong noise suppression removes quiet parts of your voice along with the noise | Step suppression down a level, or turn it off in a quiet room with a good mic less suppression |
| 06 · Network | Packet loss drops pieces of your audio on the way | Use a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and check the app's call statistics for packet loss packet loss |
By app
- Discord
- Discord says Automatically determine input sensitivity can cut off the ends of sentences or swing between too loud and too soft; turn it off and set the marker between your softest voice and the room noise. Push to Talk opens with relatively no delay when you press the key.
- Steam voice chat
- Valve says that if people hear parts of your words cut off, or you sound choppy, lower the voice transmission threshold or turn it off. If you randomly get louder and quieter, turn off Automatic volume/gain control.
- TeamSpeak
- On mobile, with voice mode set to Voice Activation, tap the mic while on a server, speak a few sentences and press Auto Settings, so the mic opens only once you start talking.
- Zoom
- Zoom suggests turning off Automatically adjust microphone volume if your audio fades in and out. Its High suppression level is the most aggressive one.
- Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft lists calls that have static and cut out among the signs of jitter or packet loss on the network.
Check it with the test
Read the sentence in the second step softly, the way you start a sentence. If your quiet words barely rise above the noise floor on the live meter, any threshold set between them and the room will cut them. An SNR (the gap between your speech and the floor) of 20 dB or more leaves room for a threshold that does not clip you.

Q.01Why is only my first word cut off?
Voice activation opens the mic only once your voice crosses its threshold, so a soft first syllable can be lost. Discord's advice is to set the marker low enough that it doesn't cut you off when you speak softly, or to use push to talk.
Q.02Is it my connection or my settings?
If quiet words vanish but loud ones always get through, look at the threshold and suppression settings. If you drop out in the middle of loud speech, check packet loss and Bluetooth.
Q.03Does push to talk fix it?
It fixes clipped starts, because the mic opens when you press the key. In Discord, the Push to Talk Release Delay slider sets how long the mic stays open after you let go, so the end of your sentence gets through.
